„Art does not reproduce the visible but makes visible. The nature of graphics easily seduces and rightly leads to the abstract. The schemes and magic ability of the imaginary characters are given and at the same time express themselves with great precision. The purer the graphic work, meaning -  the more weight is put onto the graphic portrayal of basic elements, the more inadequate the armor for a realistic picture of visible things.”

Paul Klee, Creative Confession 1920

Cable Processing Machines & Masters in the Art of Living

Paul Klee and Schleuniger – at first sight two different worlds. Or may be not? Like Schleuniger, Paul Klee searched for new concepts. Klee with a painting brush, Schleuniger with its machinery and systems. In his paintings with fantastic figures and shapes Klee almost always tied with matter and turns it into a real vision. Schleuniger has no time to dream but to produce unique machines – real pieces of art in their own way.

The Paul Klee Center (ZPK) contains a collection of more than 4000 pictures of Paul Klee (1879-1940). Hereunder many famous paintings and portraits from all his creative phases.

The ZPK – a Cultural Milestone

The idea to dedicate to Paul Klee his own museum came from his child. The decisive step was made by Livia Klee-Meyer in 1997 when she made a donation offer to the Open Hand. By accepting the donation of almost 700 pictures the City and the Canton Bern undertook to build a Paul Klee Museum by 2006.

Dr. Maurice E. Müller, medical practitioner, donated the land and 30 million Swiss Franks on condition that no museum is built, but rather a center of fine arts, music, literature and theater and that the Italian architect Renzo Piano is given this project. Now, there was nothing left that could hinder its successful implementation.

„Color owes me – and I am color“

Paul Klee was born and grew-up in Switzerland. Like his father, he remained a German citizen. Paul Klee believed in the independent force of art and all that it stood for. He broached the issues among other things architecture, history of time and creation, science and also technology. In 1922 he created the chirping machine. This object can be admired at the Museum of Modern Arts in New York.

Like Schleuniger, Klee searched for new forms of expression and concepts. He, with the painting brush, and Schleuniger with its machinery. The motto of the master in the art of living, Paul Klee, was “I am my style”. For Schleuniger, the cable machine artist from the Berner Oberland the motto is “We are our machines”.
